Dear Neighbor,

We the undersigned, residents of the communities surrounding the proposed convenience store to be located at 2400 Derry Street, Harrisburg, PA, do hereby OPPOSE the addition of this business in our community.  According to Section 7-305.7 of the Zoning code, convenience stores are no longer permitted in mid density communities without a variance and without adequate parking.  We currently have 13 food/convenience stores in our community, all within walking distance of our homes.  How many stores is too many?  And who should decide this?  The Harrisburg Planning Commission has recommended granting a variance despite the Zoning code’s opposition to more stores, despite the recommendation of its own staff to deny the application because of the negative impact on the community and despite the objections of the neighbors.

Our concern here is that the character of our community is being changed by these decisions and city government is ignoring the voice of the people.  The only way for us to take ownership for our neighborhoods is to speak with one voice of self-determination.   By this petition, we bring to the attention of our elected or appointed officials our displeasure in not being treated as equals in deciding the future of our communities and neighborhoods.  Please join us by signing this petition to let all parties know that we, the neighbors insist that the Zoning code be honored and our neighborhoods protected from these repeated encroachments on the character of the community.   We live here, own homes here and have to have a voice in whether a variance is granted.   Again, we are in opposition to another convenience store business being located within our neighborhood.  Please raise you voice.  Sign the petition and help preserve this community.

If you haven’t already done so, please sign our petition, and please add your comments to our website. Spread the word to your neighbors, friends, and family.

It is very important for all concerned neighbors to sign the petition above, share with their neighbors, and attend these meetings to express their views.

If you’d like to volunteer to help please indicate your areas of interest.  Thank you for your enthusiastic support.

Together, we can help preserve the neighborhood that we love.

Public Hearing Notice is posted on the Proposed Location at 2400 Derry Street.  Please join us at the Harrisburg Zoning Board Meeting on April 18th, 2016 6:00pm the City Center to show your support for the opposition to the introduction of another convenience store within our neighborhood.

To many convince stores around here now, will generate added foot traffic, trash and noise. We have enough as it is

No more stores are needed. These stores often are a hangout for illegal activities, loitering and an increase in trash/litter to our community/neighborhood. Currently there is NO parking as it is. The area is very hard to pull out to Derry Street as it is. The increased demand for parking will make it even harder for the current home owners to park and move about the area. This will also bring higher accident, hit and run, property damage and pedestrian crossing dangers. The noise will also increase due to the constant in and out and car stereo noise pollution from inconsiderate drivers. Safety will also be a concern due to armed robberies and hold-ups. We have many children in this area and the risk is not worth it. We have PLENTY of stores in this area already. NO MORE STORES HERE!!

I believe that the city of Harrisburg really doesn’t care about the homeowners who are trying their best to keep their neighborhoods a decent place to live. I understand why we have already lost good neighbors and will be losing more. Another store is the last thing needed in our neighborhood. Would they allow this to happen in neighborhoods across the river? I don’t think so. The rules concerning variances were overlooked. We the people who live in these neighborhoods and are tax payers and voters have been completely overlooked and disregarded.

Our community is continuing to deteriorate. In the last 2 years almost all of my neighbors are now renters. They don’t cut their grass, or clean up after their dogs. We have new trash cans and they are unwilling to pick the paper that has been dropped or has blown onto their property. I pick up cigar paper every day, for the people that smoke daily. We currently have 2 stores side by side on Brookwood St. And they cell more cigars then they do food. We don’t need one more place that helps support the communities drug habit. We have now had several shootings in the area and my 8 year is afraid at night when she hears loud noises. We have to do something to start taking back our community. Or the good homeowners that care about the neighborhood will start to move out of the city and take our tax dollars with us.

Parking is the biggest issue with opening yet another convenience store in our neighborhood. The location is right in front of a CAT bus stop (with its parking restrictions) and the 2400 block of Derry Street is already very crowded for parking, even more so from January through April when Jim Hess’s nearby is offering tax return services

I pass this location every day and the parking on the street is already too congested to allow safe driving. We do not need another convenience store in our neighborhood.(79 year resident of this neighborhood)
